And this is something that makes perfect sense, as the apps you can use on CarPlay are specifically optimized for drivers and aren’t supposed to increase the level of distraction.
If a car comes without CarPlay, getting it is quite easy, as all it takes is a head unit upgrade that typically costs anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to over $1,000, depending on the stereo you choose.
But on the other hand, those who want the full package can very well go for a full iPad that can be integrated into their dash, thus also addressing the limited app ecosystem we talked about earlier.
This is the case of this 2018 Toyota 4Runner owner who reached out to YouTuber Soundman Car Audio to build a custom dash that would integrate a larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Needless to say, this screen is gigantic and looks absolutely magical behind the wheel, especially because we all know the quality of iPad displays is top-notch.
The custom dash obviously boasts a super-premium look, and it has been specifically designed to provide access to a third-party head unit installed in the car but also to the climate controls on the Toyota.
The dash comes with an integrated USB-C connector to charge the iPad while connected, and the tablet can simply slide out of place when the owner wants to take it home.
