Apple is working with Microsoft to make new Xbox Series X controllers compatible with iPhone, iPad, Mac and more.

Support for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and other controllers is already baked into the latest versions of iOS. It’s not yet clear if Apple will add support for the PlayStation 5’s new DualSense controller, too.

Microsoft’s newest lineup of Xbox consoles debuted in the United States on November 10. Although their controllers are nearly identical to Xbox One controllers, there are some subtle differences this time around.

It seems those differences make Series X controllers incompatible with Apple devices — but that’s going to change.

Apple promises Xbox controller update

“Microsoft and Apple are working together to bring compatibility for the Xbox Series X controller to customers in a future update,” reads an update to the Apple support document on game controllers.

It doesn’t mention Xbox Series S controllers, but given that those are the same as Series X controllers, the update should support those, too. And this applies to iOS, iPadOS, macOS and tvOS.

In the meantime, players can continue to use Xbox Wireless, Xbox Elite, Xbox Adapter and DualShock 4 controllers. Other Made for iOS Bluetooth controllers, like the new Razer Kishi, are also supported.

What about DualSense?

Apple makes no mention of adding support for the PS5’s new DualSense controller, and we haven’t yet gotten to around to testing whether this works with Apple devices out of the box.

However, there is code in the iOS and iPadOS 14.3 betas that suggests official DualSense support is also on the way.
