(CNSNews.com) — The government watchdog group Judicial Watch announced on Tuesday that it has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to obtain all emails found by the FBI on the laptop of disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.)

The emails may contain evidence pertinent to the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s illicit use of a private email server to send classified information.

Weiner is married to Huma Abedin, the former top adviser to Hillary Clinton. Weiner currently is serving a federal prison sentence for sexting and transferring obscene pictures to a minor girl.

Judicial Watch sued the DOJ because the department failed to comply with two previous FOIA requests.

According to Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton, “The Anthony Weiner laptop-Clinton email cover-up by the Obama DOJ and FBI is central to uncovering the corrupt politicization of those agencies.”

“The same FBI that provided cover for Hillary Clinton was going full bore against then-candidate Trump and this lawsuit aims to uncover the full truth about that corruption,” said Fitton.

In a statement, the watchdog group said that on Dec. 12, 2016, “Judicial Watch submitted a FOIA request to the FBI, seeking all emails seized pursuant to the search warrant. The FBI denied the request and Judicial Watch appealed. The FBI has not acted on the appeal. Judicial Watch then filed a second FOIA request on September 29, 2017, to which the FBI has not responded.”

The FBI found the emails, belonging to former top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, on Weiner’s laptop in October 2016. There were data to indicate that “the emails went through Clinton’s non-‘state.gov’ email system,” Judicial Watch said.

“A separate Judicial Watch lawsuit already uncovered at least 18 classified emails from the Clinton server on the Weiner laptop,” reads the Judicial Watch statement.

In its FOIA lawsuit, Judicial Watch is seeking the following materials:

“All records regarding the search of a laptop owned or formerly owned by former Congressman Anthony Weiner.

“All records retrieved from a laptop owned or formerly owned by former Congressman Anthony Weiner.

“[And] All records of communications, emails, text messages and instant chats, sent to or from FBI officials relating to Hillary Clinton’s knowledge or possible knowledge of illicit activities involving former Congressman Anthony Weiner.”

This is not the only time the FBI has attempted to shield Clinton from the potential consequences of her irresponsible handling of classified information,” said Judicial Watch. For example, when the FBI initially discovered the Clinton emails on Weiner’s laptop, the DOJ waited “a full month” to notify lawmakers in Congress.

The delay “may have been the result of anti-Trump bias by FBI official Peter Strzok and others,” Judicial Watch said.
