Motion Eye and Predictive Capture

The Xperia XZ Premium features Sony’s new Motion Eye camera system, for advanced picture quality, as well as what Sony describes as “the world’s first 4K HDR display in a smartphone”.

Motion Eye features a memory stacked image sensor capable of slow motion video at 960 fps in HD (720p), which is four times slower than any other current smartphone, boasts Sony.

There’s also the rather clever “Predictive Hybrid Autofocus” and “Predictive Capture”:

Missing the perfect shot can be pretty frustrating. You take a snap of your dog / child / friend doing something awesome but when you check it back you’ve actually missed the crucial moment. Predictive Capture is here to fix that. The camera will automatically start buffering images when motion is detected (even before you press the shutter button) offering you a selection of shots to choose from after the action has passed. This means that even though you might have missed the perfect moment, the camera didn’t.

There’s Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on front and back and the software is the latest Google Android 7.1 (Nougat).

“Xperia XZ Premium is our most technologically capable smartphone ever” said Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO at Sony Mobile Communications.

“We’re honoured by this recognition – Xperia XZ Premium has received endorsement from operator partners, media, consumers and industry peers alike, which is testament to our relentless pursuit of innovation, to deliver great products and experiences for consumers.”

The Xperia XZ Premium is expected to appear globally “from late Spring 20173”, says Sony. It will be available in two colours: Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black. There is no announcement of pricing yet.

Note, Sony describes HDR thus:

Hyper Dynamic Range means more colour, contrast, and brightness. Like Super slow mo it has to be seen in real life. We were shown XZ Premium (4K HDR) next to the still very impressive Z5 Premium (4K). The difference was marked. Colours on the XZ Premium really ‘popped’, the sky was brighter, shadows were deeper black, and the detail level – even on a 5.5” screen – made viewing an immersive experience.
