  • The app will be shut down on May 12

Tech giant Google has decided to shut down another of its promising projects, Neighbourly — its hyperlocal social networking app. The platform which was once projected as Google’s answer to Facebook never managed to come out of the beta phase and has now been announced to be brought to an end next month.

The company has announced that the app will stop working starting May 12 and has asked users to download a copy of the data via Google Takeout on or before October 12, 2020. The app was developed by the company’s Next Billion Initiative and is one of the ones that were launched with India in mind. It aimed to give local communities a portal to seek answers to practical questions about life, routine and more.

Informing users of its decision via mail, Google said that the app has answered over a million questions, but the project hasn’t been able to grow as it had hoped. It further explained:

“We launched Neighbourly as a Beta app to connect you with your neighbors and make sharing local information more human and helpful. As a community, you’ve come together to celebrate local festivals, shared crucial information during floods, and answered over a million questions.

But Neighbourly hasn’t grown as we had hoped. In these difficult times, we believe that we can help more people by focusing on other Google apps that are already serving millions of people every day.”

Google has said that it will be shifting focus to other apps and services that are already serving a lot of people every day and has even suggested Neighbourly users sign up as Google Maps local guides to continue helping their local communities.
